About the Album

Doris Day, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, Marie Fredriksson, Shirley Bassey, Cesária Evora, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Etta James: these ladies are MONIKA HOFFMAN‘S TEN MUSES. They have shaped her musical path, not least with their special way of giving to their material a certain character, a kind of aura: „My muses have taught me that a woman can be anything: strong, cool, naughty, tender, tough, enchanting, intimate, simple, warm, overwhelming. To take all these different qualities and let them flow into these great songs – that is the essence of my album.“ Inspired by this flow, TEN MUSES bows to the aforementioned „Grandes Dames“ and embarks on an unconventional journey through various different styles. The album opens with „First Time“, a Hoffman original that celebrates her muses with an irresistible groove. The opening piece is followed by ten tributes, all arranged by Patrick Tompert. In some cases, the original character of one song has influenced the arrangement of another: the torch ballad „Besame Mucho“ becomes a fiery salsa extravaganza, whereas the dancefloor crusher „Sway“ gets drenched in the melancholia of a late-night whiskey at a lonely hotel bar. Each of the eleven tracks has been given a unique arrangement: from a solo vocal and piano setting to trio, jazz combo, pop band and big band arrangements – none of the individual songs on TEN MUSES is quite like the others. A musical love story full of surpising twists and turns - and a guaranteed happy ending: somewhere „Over the Rainbow“...
