About the Album

"Cry of the East" is a track from Dan Blake's album "Da Fé" (“of faith”), Joining him on the album are Carmen Staaf on piano and Fender Rhodes, Leo Genovese on Moog, Prophet, Farfisa, Six-Trak, Fender Rhodes, Piano, Dmitry Ishenk on acoustic and electric bass and Jeff Williams on drums. "Da Fé" is urgent music for urgent times. New York-based saxophonist and composer Blake is no stranger to the international jazz scene, having performed with luminaries of jazz and the avant garde like Esperanza Spalding, Julian Lage, Anthony Braxton, the Mivos Quartet, and many others. But he distinguishes himself as an activist and educator, where Blake's work resonates deeply with the impending climate catastrophe and the immediate need to organize around averting the worst of it. With "Da Fé" he asks the question "in what or in whom do we place our faith"? To pose this question wordlessly, Dan Blake harnesses all of his considerable skills that have earned him critical acclaim as a saxophonist and composer to create a soundscape with little parallel in the jazz world. The musical terrain that emerges is truly expansive, stretching from more serene modal statements like “Cry of the East” (dedicated to the impoverished multitudes in Palestine and beyond) to the wild electronic layering in the album’s title track “Da Fé”.

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
