Big tune.
"Available in Blue," the opening track to vibraphonist Joe Locke Quartet's Wish Upon a Star (Motéma, 2012), a collaboration with Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra under the musical direction of Edward Polochick. With arrangements by Locke's pianist, Ryan Cohan, and British reed multi-instrumentalist Tim Garland (with whom Locke plays in the Storms/Nocturnes Trio), and a mix of standards and originals by Locke and Garland, Wish Upon a Star is a rare blend of jazz ensemble and symphony orchestra that's sweet but never saccharine, dramatic but never melodramatic, and unfailingly lyrical without ever bring predictable. Joining Locke and Cohan are bassist Lorin Cohen and drummer Carmen Intorre.
