About the Album

April 5 will mark the one-year anniversary of Taylor’s passing. To honor him, Lisa B is releasing a single, “I Am an Orchestra: A Tribute to Cecil Taylor,” on March 29. The song both stands alone and is the first taste of Lisa B’s forthcoming album, “Reverberant: Poems & Music,” which is scheduled for an October release. Both “I Am an Orchestra: A Tribute to Cecil Taylor” and her upcoming album mark a departure from her previous six records, which feature her jazz vocals along with frequently embedded original spoken verse – the new releases, in contrast, present free-verse poems with occasional singing, in dynamic conversation with a diverse cast of musicians. While the single does not include actual quotes from Taylor, it is informed by Lisa B’s familiarity with this multidimensional person and performer. On the single, Lisa B is joined by a longtime collaborator, pianist Scott R. Looney, whose work was praised by All About Jazz, which called it “Satisfying set of state-of-the-art free improvisation in all its splendid, unpredictable glory.”
