Dred Scott: 1857

About the Album

"Dred Scott: 1857," the opening track to trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith's sweeping four-CD box set, Ten Freedom Summers (Cuneiform, 2012). A broad-scoped combination of composition and improvisation that brings together Smith's current Golden Quintet - also featuring pianist Anthony Davis, bassist John Lindberg and drummers Pheeroan akLaff and Susie Ibara - with the Southwest Chamber Music group, a nine-piece classical ensemble conducted by Jeff von der Schmidt, Ten Freedom Summers is a profound work that addresses issues of Civil Rights in the 21st Century, as the United States heads into a presidential election of particular importance.
