About the Album
"No Outerwear," from drummer Matt Wilson's latest release with his Arts & Crafts group, An Attitude for Gratitude (Palmetto, 2012). It's been five years since the last Arts & Craft recording, The Scenic Route (Palmetto, 2007), and the lineup remains unchanged with the exception of the bass chair, where Martin Wind has replaced the late, great Dennis Irwin, who passed away in 2008 at the far-too-young age of 56.
"No Outerwear" is one of three Wilson originals on a CD that also includes compositional contributions from fellow Arts and Crafters Wind and keyboardist Gary Versace. Terell Stafford may not contribute compositionally to an album that also features material by Nat Adderley, John Scofield and Jaco Pastorius, with a couple of standards and the gentle closer, Simon and Garfunkel's megahit, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," but his superb trumpet and flugelhorn work is both featured and essential throughout, in particular on the Hopper/Adair chestnut, "There's No You," a tribute to Irwin, who occasionally sang the song in performance with the group.
