About the Album
Released to coincide with his 2012 NEA Jazz Masters Award, Sound Travels (eOne, 2012) is an eclectic special project that, for the first time in decades, focuses as much on DeJohnette's fine pianism as it does his inestimable and better-known skill behind the drum kit.
Having participated on hundreds of recordings with fellow jazz stars including Charles Lloyd, Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett in addition to collectives like Gateway and Trio Beyond, DeJohnette's discography as a leader is the focus of a week-long All About Jazz celebration. "Sonny Light" is the first of five Download of the Day tracks that will also include selections from Live at Yoshi's (2011), Music We Are (2009), The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers (2006) and Music From the Hearts of the Masters (2005), all released on DeJohnette's own Golden Beams imprint.
Sound Travels also includes guest appearances from Bobby McFerrin, Bruce Hornsby and Jason Moran, but "Sonny Light" is a feature for the album's core group, and is one of five tracks to feature DeJohnette doubling on both piano and drums.
Personnel: Ambrose Akinmusire: trumpet; Tim Ries: tenor saxophone; Lionel Loueke: guitar; Jack DeJohnette: piano, drums; Esperanza Spalding: bass; Luisito Quintero, percussion.
