About the Album

"Stand Well Back / Spit It Out," from British composer/arranger/keyboardist Colin Towns' latest project, Blue Touch Paper, and its debut recording, Stand Well Back (Provocateur Records, 2011).

Featuring Polar Bear/Loose Tubes saxophonist and bass clarinetist Mark Lockheart and Troyka guitarist Chris Montague, Blue Touch Paper also includes bassist Edward MacLean, drummer Benny Greb and percussionist Stephen Maass. Towns takes the spotlight on the first half of "Stand Well Back / Spit It Out," before the group enters for some gritty interplay and incendiary ensemble work, combining hints of electrified minimalism and Afro-centric polyrhythms--even hints of Canterbury-styled progressive rock, all within the context of a sophisticated jazz vernacular.
